The Jafagirls are pleased to announce the release of the book Craft Activism: People, Ideas, and Projects from the New Community of Handmade and How You Can Join In by Joan Tapper and Gayle Zucker in which are honored to be featured in. Along with many others, we create, AND give, and connect and this book is a celebration of this movement.”
Nancy: There is a feeling of playfulness that runs throughout the book. Each section is fueled with the joy and pride of women creating something that has personal meaning. It makes you want to join them and to try making things with your hands.
Since I was a little girl, if I had glue stuck to my fingers , I was rolling it into a ball and then shaping it into little people or horses. I got to know my grandmother by making things with her. Crafting is satisfying to the soul and meaningful to give to others, it’s a way to make deeply satisfying relationships or just bridges of friendliness with strangers.. It is like passing on a bit of your soul.
Corrine aka jafabrit: Faythe Levine of HANDMADE NATION states in the FOREWORD that ”…once one’s hands are in motion,” making” is difficult to stop.
I’ve had a passion for “making” all my life. Even when poor and resources limited, I enjoyed the challenge of finding and recycling things to make something beautiful or useful. I am excited to be included in a book that explores how creativity can be the springboard for activism on so many levels.
Books will be available at our reception (building next to speedway) and Dark Star Books on Xenia Ave in town.
Want to thank Casey Daley for the lovely article and our inclusion in the Glencoe High School newspaper Crimson Times , based in Hillsboro, Oregon.
A fellow blogger (Ansie) tipped me off about one of my photos of the Knit Knot Tree being included in their magazine article “So You Want a Revolution” with an interview of Mandy Moore. Mandy and Leanne Prain wrote the book Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crotchet and Knit Graffiti ( Arsenal Pulp Press).
Congratulations to Ansie for her wonderful article about Islamic Embroidery

Meanwhile we continue to add flowers to the Flower Power Pole on the corner of Corry St & Xenia Avenue in Yellow Springs, Ohio
The Knit Knot Tree was included in this book published in August

believe it or not
I am still surprised by the inclusion, but I guess us putting a sweater on a tree continues to amuse. It is listed in the chapter titled Artistic License (Page 187) and you know I have one of those LOL!
Jafa Street Hotties LOL! Virgil Hervey posted this funny cartoon on his Yellow Springs Blog, which had me in stitches. If you want to keep up with local news, gossip and opinion then Virgils blog is the place to go. For local news check out Yellow Springs News and for arts and culture the YSarts Blog.
“Local artists Corrine Bayraktaroglu and Nancy Mellon, aka the JafaGirls, stand behind a pole they have tagged with knit graffiti on Dayton Street. Their Yellow Springs public fiber art is featured in the new book, ‘Yarn Bombing,’ from Arsenal Pulp Press.“
Nancy and Corrine are proud to be included in the new yarn bombing book and amongst so many experienced knitters/crocheters. If you get a chance to check the book out you will find it visually beautiful with great ideas, patterns, interviews, and some amazing work.
The giant pink bunny on the Italian hillside has to be my FAVE.
